An incoming sandstorm is hitting the city, causing poor visibility and gusty winds. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mystery-Skara-Brae-Neolithic-Scotland/dp/1620555735 In 3200 BC, Orkney Island off the coast of Northern Scotland was home to a small farming village called Skara Brae. For reasons unknown, after nearly six centuries of continuous habitation, the village was abandoned around 2600 BC and its stone structures covered over--perhaps deliberately, like the structures at Gobekli Tepe. Although now well-excavated, very little is known about the peaceful people who lived at Skara Brae or their origins. Who were they and where did they go? Drawing on his in-depth knowledge of the connections between the cosmology and linguistics of Egyptian, Dogon, Chinese, and Vedic traditions, Laird Scranton reveals the striking similarities between Skara Brae and the Dogon of Mali, who s...

  • Russia to restrict Egyptian exports unless Egypt accepts its wheat

Russia has threatened to ban citrus imports from Egypt after the North African country failed to approve Russian wheat shipments. Several wheat cargoes suspected of containing traces of ergot fungus have been held up at Russian ports. Egypt's state grain buyer purchased 540,000 tonnes of the grain from Russia in July before tightening restrictions on ergot. The sales were originally agreed to under a rule allowing 0.05 percent ergot, a common international standard, and Russia wants that agreement upheld. Russian wheat export prices fell last week, partly due to delayed supplies to Egypt, and are expected to remain under pressure until the situation is resolved.

Phoenecians, the ancient inhabitants of modern-day Lebanon, were known to be expert sailors. Through the eyes of one these seaworthy Phoenecians, we will visit the ancient ports of Byblos, Rhodes, Tharros, Motya, and the famous Roman naval base at Carthage. Phoenicia (UK /fɨˈnɪʃə/ or US /fəˈniːʃə/; from the Greek: Φοινίκη, Phoiníkē; Arabic: فينيقية‎, Finiqyah) was an ancient Semitic civilization situated on the western, coastal part of the Fertile Crescent and centered on the coastline of modern Lebanon and Tartus Governorate in Syria. All major Phoenician cities were on the coastline of the Mediterranean, some colonies reaching the Western Mediterranean. It was an enterprising maritime trading culture that spread across the Mediterranean from 1550 BC to 300 BC. The Phoenicians used the galley, a man-powered sailing vessel, and are credited with the invention of the bireme. They were famed in Classical Greece and Rome as 'traders in purple', referring to their monopoly on the precious purple dye of the Murex snail, used, among other things, for royal clothing, and for their spread of the alphabet (or abjad), from which almost all modern phonetic alphabets are derived. Phoenicians are widely thought to have originated from the earlier Canaanite inhabitants of the region. Although Egyptian seafaring expeditions had already been made to Byblos to bring back "cedars of Lebanon" as early as the 3rd millennium BC, continuous contact only occurred in the Egyptian New Empire period. In the Amarna tablets of the 14th century BC, people from the region called themselves Kenaani or Kinaani (either the same as the Canaanites, or the Kenanites/Cainanites spoken of the Septuagint version of Gen. 10:24), although these letters predate the invasion of the Sea Peoples by over a century. Much later, in the 6th century BC, Hecataeus of Miletus writes that Phoenicia was formerly called χνα (Latinized: khna), a name Philo of Byblos later adopted into his mythology as his eponym for the Phoenicians: "Khna who was afterwards called Phoinix". Phoenicia is really a Classical Greek term used to refer to the region of the major Canaanite port towns, and does not correspond exactly to a cultural identity that would have been recognised by the Phoenicians themselves. It is uncertain to what extent the Phoenicians viewed themselves as a single ethnicity and nationality. Their civilization was organized in city-states, similar to ancient Greece. However, in terms of archaeology, language, life style and religion, there is little to set the Phoenicians apart as markedly different from other Semitic cultures of Canaan. As Canaanites, they were unique in their remarkable seafaring achievements.

Egyptian officials say Cairo International Airport closed to arrivals for 70 minutes, after the sandstorm reduced visibility to 150 metres. The Egyptian aviation authority says today's departures from Cairo's airport haven't been affected. But it adds that the country's second-busiest airport in Alexandria has been closed to arrivals and departures, with flights being diverted to other airports unaffected by the storm. Four flights were apparently diverted to another airport, while a fifth returned to Amman in Jordan. The state news agency says the port at the coastal city of Alexandria and the nearby Dekheila port were both closed because of strong winds. The usually idyllic holiday destination Dahab was also hit by the bad weather - forcing lifeguards to rescue swimmers and divers from rough seas. =========================================================== Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com (ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service (iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mystery-Skara-Brae-Neolithic-Scotland/dp/1620555735 In 3200 BC, Orkney Island off the coast of Northern Scotland was home to a small farming village called Skara Brae. Drawing on his in-depth knowledge of the connections between the cosmology and linguistics of Egyptian, Dogon, Chinese, and Vedic traditions, Laird Scranton reveals the striking similarities between Skara Brae and the Dogon of Mali, who still practice the same cosmology and traditions they once shared with pre-dynastic Egypt. He shows how the earliest Skara Brae houses match the typical Dogon stone house as well as Schwaller de Lubicz’s intrepretation of the Egyptian Temple of Man at Luxor. He explains how megalithic stone sites near Skara Brae conform to Dogon cosmology, each representing sequential stages of creation as described by Dogon priests, and he details how the houses at Skara Brae also represent a concept of creation. Citing a linguistic phenomenon known as “ultraconserved words,” the author compares words of the Faroese language at Skara Brae, a language with no known origin, with important cosmological words from Dogon and ancient Egyptian traditions, finding obvious connections and similarities.

It's a highly contentious issue in Egypt - are the small islands of Sanafir and Tiran owned by Egypt or Saudi Arabia? Located between both countries at the top of the Red Sea, they're considered to be strategically important because of their proximity to ports in Jordan and Israel. After months of debates and protests in Cairo, the territorial dispute is back in the parliamentary spotlight. A committee of Egyptian MPs has approved an agreement to hand over control of the islands to Saudi Arabia, despite the High Administrative Court in January declaring the plan unconstitutional. What's the real story behind the sell-off?
